Fabulously Flexy in February

Ananda Wellness Bliss Yoga Shop

Flexibility is a fascinating concept to me. It is often placed on a pedestal as though it is the holy grail of yoga and thus us yoga teachers are frequently engaged in conversations about flexibility, resulting in some fun flexibility-themed memes, like the ever-popular Batman-slapping-Robin and “me vs teacher” memes:

Flexibility is sometimes referred to as the quality of bending easily without breaking, and while this is true Western physiological terms define flexibility “as the ability to move muscles and joints through their complete range without pain”. An ability we were born with, but that most of us lose.

Yoga philosophy teaches us that

“Finding the balance between our stability/strength (Sthira) and flexibility/ease (Sukha) in a yoga pose is one of the most important aspects of our yoga practice but this applies not just to our physical practice but to our mental state and attitude as well.

“I am too stiff to or not flexible enough to do yoga”

must be the most common argument I hear from people who say they are interested in yoga but have never tried it. Of course, they could just be giving me a polite reason not to take a class but not practising yoga because of inflexibility may be the poorest excuse out there. Not only will yoga help improve your range of flexibility but in fact, being a little or very ‘stiff’ may prove to be an asset in your practice

I, myself dear Yoga Family am NOT the most flexible. When I began my yoga journey and did my teacher training, I was one of the least flexible people in my entire class, and even today, after all this time, countless classes and daily practice, I am still not a pretzel…. (not that I want to or have to be one anyway), look at my progress from 2019 to 2025… My point is YOGA will increase and improve your flexibility and not give you flexibility, Yoga will teach you how to become flexible on and off the mat.

Stretching & Flexibility pretty much go hand in hand with one another; by moving and stretching our bodies, we can increase blood circulation, reduce the risk of injuries, and improve balance. When flexibility is present in the mind and spirit, it allows us to be calmer, more centered, and less reactive to daily issues. As we move through life with a flexible attitude, small everyday obstacles don’t bother us as much. We can be resourceful and find creative solutions to anything that comes our way.

Some of us are in the blessed zone of being naturally flexible, whom I admire with glees of happiness as I watch you bend, fold and glide with grace. However, too much flexibility can have its own trials and tribulations, injuries, and as we all know “too much of a good thing, is not always – a good thing!

With practice, patience (plenty of patience), commitment and the willingness to adapt, adjust and accommodate yourself on and off the mat whether you’re flexible or inflexible this is a fantastic journey to be on and I can’t wait to help you find a newfound love with flexibility as I teach, share and inspire your discovery of becoming FABULOUSLY FLEXY!

Love & Light, Lynnette
